SUSTAINABLE BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES

You have heard of Green Building; become a Green Building Professional as KVCTC continues its Sustainable Building Technologies Program, Spring 2012, with the continuation of its one-year Certificate Degree, Home Performance Skill Set, and addition of its Advanced Skill Set.

We are offering four Residential Energy Efficiency Courses with the chance to earn up to four different BPI (Building Performance Institute) certifications.

Home Performance Skill Set

Spring 2012 Schedule:

SBT 110-01 - BPI Installer

Jan 23 - Jan 27, 2012

SBT 111-01 - BPI Building Analyst

Feb 06 - Feb 10, 2012

SBT 112-01 - BPI Envelope Professional

Feb 20 - Feb 24, 2012

SBT 113-01 - BPI Heating Professional

TBD

SBT 110 - BPI Installer (RBE-WHALCI)

This course is designed to prepare students to conduct home performance and weatherization jobs to BPI’s standards of industry best practices using the “whole house approach.” Course material topics include health and safety on the job, the house as a system, introductory building science, basic and advanced air sealing, fire protection, and combustion safety awareness.

SBT 111 - BPI Building Analyst (BA)

This course covers fundamental principles of energy and building science through technical instruction on how to optimize airflow and quality, moisture regulation, lighting appliance energy savings, and expertise in combustion testing and safety. This course provides students with the opportunity for hands-on field training to apply the fundamental principles learned in the classroom to an existing residential home.

SBT 112 - BPI Envelope Professional (EP)

This course focuses on residential building thermal and pressure boundaries as well as ways to enhance the envelope through insulation and air-sealing techniques. The course enhances students’ building science skills and offers students the opportunity to understand not only how to analyze a home, but the importance of the process.

SBT 113 - BPI Heating Professional (HP)

This program is being offered with financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Labor, WorkForce West Virginia, and the West Virginia Community and Technical College System.  www.greenup.org

CERTIFICATE DEGREE

SBT 101 - Introduction to Sustainable Design and Construction

An introduction to the theory and practice of sustainable design and construction. This course will explore the meaning of sustainability and how it is applied to architectural design and building construction in the context of ecology, economy, and social equity. The course will cover a range of sustainable precedents from indigenous cultures to modern-day design and construction.

SBT 103 - Sustainable Building Technology I - New Construction

This course will cover innovative new construction techniques addressing structure, waterproofing, moisture management, and thermal resistance. A variety of materials and techniques will be used to examine foundations, wall assemblies, roof assemblies, and fenestration. The course will end with the construction of a full-scale mock-up of a floor, wall, and roof assembly displaying structure, thermal, air, and water-resistant barriers.

SBT 105 - Sustainable Building Technology II - Existing Buildings

This course examines existing buildings in a sustainable context.  Topics covered include residential green remodeling, retrofitting, commercial building operations and maintenance, adaptive reuse, and historic preservation.  Students will learn how to implement sustainable practices to reduce the environmental footprint of an existing building over its lifetime.

SBT 120 - Sustainable Rating Systems I - LEED Green Associate
The LEED Green Associate credential is intended for professionals who want to demonstrate green building expertise in non-technical fields of practice. The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) has created the LEED Green Associate credential, which denotes basic knowledge of green design, construction and operations. This course will prepare students to sit for and pass the LEED GA exam, the first step in becoming a LEED Accredited Professional.

SBT 140 - Sustainable Rating Systems III - LEED for Homes
This course will prepare students for the LEED Accredited Professional (AP) for Homes exam.  The course will also provide knowledge of the LEED Rating System and the skills necessary to certify a residence under the LEED for Homes rating system.  The LEED AP Homes credential provides a standard for professionals participating in design and construction of high-performance green homes.
